Are you teaching your kids to be consumers?

My new Reflection Series offers five questions with corresponding articles/videos to inspire intentional and compassionate mothering.  Sign up for posts by email if you would like the series delivered to your inbox.

I created this series because I believe that the process of regular reading and reflection naturally inspires growth – and I wanted a place to share some of the articles/videos created by others that especially moved me.  I enjoy learning as it fulfills me personally as well as helps me become more informed as a parent.  However while I think being open to new ideas and considering them is important, I often do not think there is one *right way.*  The articles are not meant to overwhelm you as a list of things to do or not to do – they are simply offered as prompts for reflection.  Each of us is on our own unique journey, and our choices do not have to be the same as one another to be right for us and our families.

Are you teaching your kids to be passive consumers?

This article from The Telegraph made me consider just how much I’m buying into consumerism (and unknowingly pressuring my kids to do the same). Worth some more reflection on my part – how about you?

How is the bullying environment in your child’s classroom – and what can you do about it?

If you have ever thought about how teachers can help prevent loneliness and isolation in the classroom… this piece from Momastery offered a creative approach.

Do you wonder if your sons are being pressured into violence and emotional isolation by cultural “norms”?

I have read about how we harmfully pressure boys to “be men” in a very stereotypical sense, but this video from Upworthy was very moving with real faces and real voices… making its message even more urgent.

How safe is your family?

Here is a comprehensive list of safety tips for families from Aha Parenting, starting with what is most important.

I’m fortunate in that, as I tried to be the “perfect child” myself, I don’t expect that from my daughter. I secretly like when she’s less than “perfect” because that makes her real. And it gives me the chance to show her that I’ll love her no matter what! That is a beautiful quote. Thank you for sharing it!
