Dear Daughter: Your Journey Has Begun

A letter to my daughter about my hopes for her future

Dear Daughter,

Your journey in this world began five days ago.  I can honestly say that the pain and exhaustion from the pregnancy, the birth and the after-birth has been completely worth it.  I would do it all a million times over to have you as my baby – just as you are.  You are an immeasurably precious gift to our family.

Every day I see you growing, taking in the world, and bringing joy to those around you.  I can only imagine the beautiful road that lies ahead, with all its twists and turns, leading you to fulfil your purpose in life.

Above all, I want you to know that you are loved.

I want you to know you are worthy of love.

And I want you to know you are capable of the greatest good one can do in this world: sharing love.

I have started this series of letters – Dear Daughter – to capture a bit of your journey and to record inspirational moments.

For now, I will reflect on one of my all-time favourite quotes about parenting, as I begin this new path of being your mother and, at the same time, raising your two big brothers:

“While they are at your side, love these little ones to the uttermost.  Forget yourself.  Serve them; care for them; lavish all your tenderness on them.  Value your good fortune while it is with you, and let nothing of the sweetness of their babyhood go unprized.  Not for long will you keep the happiness that now lies within your reach.  You will not always walk in the sunshine with a little warm, soft hand nestling in each of yours, nor hear little feet pattering beside you, and eager baby voices questioning and prattling of a thousand things with ceaseless excitement.  Not always will you see that trusting face upturned to yours, feel those little arms about your neck, and those tender lips pressed upon your cheek, nor will you have that tiny form to kneel beside you, and murmur baby prayers into your ear.  Love them and win their love, and shower on them all the treasures of your heart.  Fill up their days with happiness, and share with them their mirth and innocent delights.  Childhood is but for a day.  Ere you are aware it will be gone with all its gifts forever.” -George Townshend

May I cherish every moment with you, my darling.

With love,

Mama

That quote made me cry a little bit. I’m a sentimental mother of a 4 year old boy and see all too well his babyness in the past now. Time to have another one! Congratulations on your beautiful little girl, your family is so very blessed.

Absolutely beautiful! Congratulations Chelsea. The baby moments are so special and so fleeting and can easily get lost while you’re managing all the busyness of life with older children. All the best as you focus on treasuring your special new gift.

Thanks so much, Leanne. I’m definitely trying to treasure these moments – it’s my last time having a newborn and I don’t want to rush anything. x

Congratulations on your beautiful baby girl! And thank you for sharing that beautiful quote – exactly what I needed to read this evening. As my “baby” is approaching his 7th birthday, I can almost see some of these sweet, sweet moments vanishing before my eyes. Trying to treasure every single moment. May you do the same with your three babies.
